The DSMC Physical Therapy Approach
Doylestown Sports Medicine Center’s physical therapy focuses on functional movement in the evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. An episode of care begins with a comprehensive evaluation, including patient history, systems reviews and detection of pain generators (“the victims”). The evaluation identifies dysfunctions in movement within the kinetic chain including range of motion, strength, stability and biomechanics (“the culprits”). The treatment approach is geared toward treating the victims while removing the culprits.
Treatment typically begins with attaining central stability and local (“core”) stabilization to foster peripheral movement, strength and power. Various manual physical therapy techniques are utilized to remove mechanical blocks (joint, muscular, neuromuscular) that impede the attainment of functional movement. As range of motion is gained, it is retained through proper neuromuscular activation, re-education and patterning. Those patterns are then systematically integrated into the biomechanics of daily functional movements, making “life your exercise”. Becoming a more effective and efficient mover in life works to sustain therapeutic gains and balance the mechanical stress on the body. The same principles and pathways are applied in our systematic and progressive return to sport programs. Our approach assists patients in restoring and maximizing human function to ultimately improve quality of life and return them to their health and wellness activities.
