Running Program

The Doylestown Sports Medicine Center's Comprehensive Running Program can assist YOU in developing the physical platform required for running.

Do You Have What it Takes to Run?

The Flexibility?

The Strength?

The Stability?

The Neuromuscular Control?

The Mechanics?

How the Running Program Works

1. The Evaluation

DSMC's program begins with a complete neuromusculoskeletal physical therapy evaluation. The evaluation assesses the specific neuromuscular requirements of walking/hiking.  A comprehensive review of patient history and training history is then completed.. Followed by and assessment of range of motion, strength, flexibility and stability required of the body to walk or hike efficiently and effectively are assessed.

A complete biomechanical walking and hiking analysis can also be performed to learn "How" you walk/hike. See our Walking/Hiking Analysis Page.

2. The Plan

From the evaluation an individualized program is developed with the walker or hiker based upon their specific needs and goals.

Need to Learn How To:

  • Build strength to improve performance? We can help!

  • Gain flexibility to walk or hike more efficiently? We can help!

  • Improve stability to stop and prevent nagging injuries? We can help!

  • Learn your effective walking and form? We can help!

  • Got troubles with ascending or descending hills or mountains? We can help!

3. Treatment

Deficits in posture, range of motion, strength, joint mobility/stability and core stability are addressed through physical therapy interventions to restore the neuromuscular and biomechanical requirements of walking or hiking.

Form drills are then implemented to address the individual’s walking or hiking impairments.

Finally, a systematic and progressive transition to the walking / hiking program is initiated for the novice and injured runner. The program allows for the moderation of mechanical stress loaded into the body.

Biomechanical Analysis for Running

The most universal mode of human locomotion that is taken for granted...until it starts to breakdown.  It seems so simple...walking. Yet, over time when done with poor mechanics it can be one of the most debilitating activities we do.

Faulty movement patterns when you walk can lead to overuse of bone, joints, tendons, ligaments and muscle.  Overuse patterns can lead to pain and loss of performance.  Research shows that gaining strength and flexibility do not automatically correlate to a positive change in How you walk.  The Walking/Hiking Analysis gives us an in-depth breakdown of your walking form.  It provides us with vital information about how your walking form is contributing to current injury, loss of performance efficiency, and/or the potential risk of injury or re-injury.  Understanding your faulty movement patterns during walking is a major step in recovering from or preventing injury, as well as improving performance.
